The original Student Health Center opened on March 24, 1971 in the Brocker Health Service building, named in honor of Edith P. Brocker, first dean of UNC Charlotte's School of Nursing. The growth of the university required a larger building. On October 10, 2007, the new Student Health Center opened. At nearly 32,000 square feet, the new building is almost triple the size of the Brocker building and features 21 medical exam rooms including two negative pressure rooms that can be used to prevent the spread of infectious bacteria. The Brocker building has been renamed Memorial Hall and is home to the Army ROTC and Air Force ROTC.

In 2023 The building where Student Health is housed was renamed the JOYCE DAVIS WADDELL CENTER FOR STUDENT HEALTH AND WELLBEING
