Attention: Please allow 2-3 business days after registering for classes to log in to the Student Blue site to complete a waiver or enroll in the plan.
After enrollment of a premium plan, allow up to 7 business days for the premium plan upcharge to be added to the student account, if the enrollment is completed after July(for fall) or November (for Spring). If enrollment is done in May through June, the charge will not be added to the tuition account until on or around the first week in July.
Students are required to have health insurance either by remaining on their parents' insurance or buying an individual insurance plan. Students without insurance may purchase the Student Blue Student Health Insurance. Students will be automatically billed (on the tuition account) and enrolled in the Student Blue coverage unless a waiver is completed by the semester due date listed below.

Beginning January 1, 2026, International students holding F-1 or J-1 non-immigrant statuses are required to participate in the UNC System Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) and are not able to opt out of the medical plan unless they meet one of the conditions outlined in this guidance from Student Blue.
- Upon registering for classes (fall or spring) your tuition account will be charged the insurance rate (value plan) for each Fall and spring semester enrolled.
- Students are required to have health insurance. Students may remain on their parents’ insurance or buy their own health insurance plan. The plan must be a creditable health plan in order to use for waiving purposes. Students must provide proof of insurance by submitting an online waiver to Student Blue. After the waiver is submitted and approved by Student Blue, an insurance premium credit will be applied to the tuition account. Allow up to 15 days. Private health insurance plans must be effective by Sept.1st (fall) or Feb. 1st (spring).
- Students without health insurance will be charged the value plan rate and will need to physically enroll in the Student Blue Health Insurance plan. When enrolling, you may choose the value or premium plan. If you select the premium plan the difference of the two rates will be added to your account in addition the the value plan rate that was added upon registration.
- For the most up-to-date status of your waiver request, refer to recent emails from Student Blue and Student Health Insurance Dept.
- Please read all emails from the Student Health Center or Student Blue. Emails will be sent to the student’s uncc.edu email address. Student Blue has the option for you to have a secondary email address, such as a parent’s address.

All International students (F-1,F-2 or J-1, J-2 visas) are required to have health insurance while attending UNC Charlotte. Regardless if the student is living in the US or abroad. Students must enroll into the Student Health Insurance Plan.
UNC Charlotte students, who meet the following criteria, are eligible for the UNC System Student Health Insurance Hard Waiver (Mandatory Plan) and are required to have health insurance. Listed below are the eligibility criteria:
- Undergraduate Students: enrolled in a main campus program, registered for six or more degree-seeking credit hours.
- Graduate Students: enrolled in a main campus program, registered for three or more credit hours in a degree-seeking or certificate program.
- International Students: All students with F-1,F-2 or J-1, J-2 visas.
These students are automatically charged the current semesterly premium amount for the Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) when they register for the semester. All charges for the Student Blue insurance premium will appear on your UNC Charlotte Student Account. You must provide proof of insurance on-line at the Student Blue link above in order to waive the premium.
These students are also automatically charged the mandatory Health Services Fee, providing them access to all student health related services at the Student Health Center, the Center for Counseling and Psychological Services, and the Center for Wellness Promotion.
The Insurance Requirement DOES NOT apply to students enrolled in a Distance Education program.
- Many online courses are not designated as Distance Education. Check with your program to determine if the program's campus location is coded as Main Campus or Distance Education. If coded Main campus, the insurance requirement does apply.
- Distance Education students may be eligible to be enrolled in the Student Blue Plan. Call 704-687-7435 for more information.
- Insurance premiums cannot be prorated. Insurance coverage dates above will apply regardless of your enrollment date.
- If you are purchasing Student Blue insurance, you must go online to activate the insurance by enrolling.
- Medicaid Family Planning is not credible health insurance and will not be approved to obtain a waiver.
- To waive using TRICARE or Veteran Affairs insurance, enter the sponsor or Military Member's social security number or DOD number. Upload your military ID card or a military proof of health insurance coverage letter.
- When your waiver has been approved, a credit (looks like a payment) of the premium amount will appear on your Student Account.
- Student Blue insurance will NOT provide coverage for dependents, (spouses, domestic partners and children).
